Korea’s ladies fared better on finals day, however, as longtime partners Yoo Hyun Young and Jung Kyung Eun, semi-finalists at the first two Super Series events this year, took their first ever title outside of Korea. Singapore’s Gu Juan beat Osaka International champion Wang Rong en route to the final, but there she ran into Lee Hyun Jin, who was to win her first international title since the 2004 German Junior Open!
Like Yoo, Hendri Kurniawan Saputra bounced back from early defeat in the category where he was top seed. Hendri and brother Hendra were defeated in the men’s doubles quarter-finals but the former managed to snatch the mixed doubles title, playing with Vanessa Neo. Meanwhile, Hsueh Hsuan Yi’s finals appearance was the only one in the tournament by a first or second seed and the Chinese Taipei player took the title from Japan’s Koichi Saeki.
