There will be only Jan O. Jorgensen and Peter Gade to keep Denmark’s flag flying in Paris from August 23rd to 29th. Joachim Persson’s name was recently crossed from the last qualifying list for the Yonex BWF World Championships.
“I guess it must be true. I did withdraw,” said Joachim Persson, who was stunned with a strange disease while playing in Singapore last June. “In Singapore, I got a bad stomach and then I could feel strong pain in my hip. It went away but the next week in Indonesia, I made another bad movement in that 1st set against Smith then approximately 24-36 hours after my match, my hip went insane,” said the Dane.
“I couldn’t walk, sit, lie or anything and I got home in a wheelchair and extreme pain on the flight. When I got home I got morphine from the doctor and some other medication. The hip problem disappeared but I got pain in my foot instead and couldn’t walk again. And afterwards the same happened in my right toe,” added the blue-eyed Dane. The doctors explained that he was suffering from “reactive arthritis”, a rare complication that may occur after a disease.
Persson will miss the French meet, but remains optimistic and hopes to make it up when the tour comes to Paris again, this time for the Super Series leg.
“I try to see the good things in everything. I am always trying to see the up side and what I can influence. It might take some time but I’ll get over this,” he added.
His scans on Thursday seemed good in spite of a recurrent inflammation, but the Dane was hopeful he could resume training soon.
