Tahiti, September 9th 2010. The teenager was her nation’s representative in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore last month and that, along with her win in the South Pacific, gives a hint that she could be the new jewel for the USA.
Ketpura, only 18, stunned Elisa Chanteur of France in the first round, before beating 2nd seed Charmaine Reid in the semis, and taking on Agnese Allegrini of Italy in the final, beating all in straight games.
It was a great first reward for the teenage girl, who had been involved in the Uber Cup in Kuala Lumpur last May before playing in Singapore’s YOG. In the latter event, she finished second in her group, beaten by England’s Sarah Milne.
In the men’s singles event, Alistair Casey beat his lower ranked opponents, while the doubles events were dominated by Oceanians, with Smith/Warfe winning in men’s doubles, Choo/Wilson-Smith in the women’s doubles and Smith/Wilson-Smith in the mixed, making it two for Ross Smith and Kate Wilson Smith.
The event, held in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, had welcome 40 nations after its upgrade to an International Series BWF-sanctioned tournament.
