Halim Haryanto (here with Eva Lee – Photo by Yves Lacroix, Badmintonphoto), a former top Indonesian player who had gone to the USA to spar and coach in California, secured an international success with his mixed doubles partner Eva Lee in the XIXth Brazil International in Sao Paulo this week-end. They scored a 21-11, 22-20 victory in the final over Lee Hock Kai, who is now partnering Priscilla Lun.
Hock Kai, however, was the surprise winner of the men’s singles event when he beat top seed Kevin Cordon of Guatemala. The former Malaysian player, who used to travel until 2006 for his national squad, moved to San Gabriel, where is is now a club coach, and this week-end clinched his first international tournament as well.
This event was clearly a success for former national players now under the US banner. Haryanto was both All England and World Champion as an Indonesian shuttler and Lee Hock Kai was once a Malaysian national team member while the women’s doubles winner Paula Obanana, who also partnered Eva Lee, used to play under the Filipino banner.
