For the first time in 10 years, a badminton player won the prestigious Best Male Athlete of the Year at the CCTV (China Central Television) sports personality awards ceremony in Beijing on Sunday. Lin Dan won what is taken as the premier honour on the Chinese sporting calendar.
The shuttler, after his success in the Asian Games, was nominated together with other sports stars, including Chinese superstar hurdler Liu Xiang and gymnast Chen Yibing.
As he was away and couldn’t receive his award himself – he is in Malaysia getting ready to play the Malaysia Open – his coach Li Yongbo received the award in his name.
“It is the first sports personality award in 10 years for our badminton team. I believe that the one standing on the top podium of the London Olympics will still be Lin,” said Li to Xinhua News Agency.
