Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels pulled off an exciting comeback against the number 7 seeds from Indonesia Liliyana Natsir / Tantowi Ahmad in the second round of the All England this afternoon.
Article and interview by Mark Phelan (Live in Birmingham)
The German pair were staring defeat in the face after losing the opening game 14-21 and when trailing 15-19 in the second they looked to be heading out of the competition. Some extremely good serving from Michels pulled the German pair back level with the Indonesians and with the wind in their sails they went on to clinch the second game 21-19 with a run of 6 straight points.
The Germans, now carrying the momentum with them got into their stride quickly and efficiently in the third game as they increased the tempo of the match and took an 11-7 lead at the mid-game interval.
Taking the first point after the break to lead 12-7 the German pair were now in complete control as the Indonesians looked broken and Fuchs and Michels drove home their advantage to move into the quarter-final where they will definitely play a European pair as due to meet them will be Robertson/Wallwork or Zieba/Mateusiak.
Elsewhere in the early afternoon mixed competition, Europe had extra reason to celebrate as Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen advanced with a 2-game win over Lee Sheng Mu and Chien Yu Chin of Chinese Taipei.
