Greve Strands Badminton Klub is the new reigning champion of the Danish Elite league after beating the 2009 champions Team Skælskør-Slagelse in the final of the Danish Interclub Championships on Tuesday evening. The tie went down to the wire and Greve beat TSS 4-2 after coming back from a 0-2 lead from Peter Gade’s team-mates.
Joachim Persson – who was part of TSS when they won in 2009 – is the man who delivered the winning point for his team Greve on Tuesday, after an incredible night of suspense. The Danish player, who has been injured for some time and away from international competition, beat Hans Kristian Vitthinghus in three tight games, but the main upset was created when world number ones Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen were beaten quite easily by Rasmus Mangor and Lars Paaske 14-21, 13-21. Mathias Boe commented that they could be blamed for the loss of their team even if it wasn’t the only reason.
“Carsten and I preformed poorly, lost our match, and eventually the team match. Judith won her ladies’ singles but got robbed on her match point, and the point was called let which would have made it 3-1. Still Carsten and me have to take the blame. In sports there’s a lot of up’s and down’s, and it’s the worst feeling to lose something you really want to win. Now we will rest and prepare for Sudirman Cup,” said Boe on his Facebook wall.
Judith Meulendijks had been indeed very close to taking the third point for TSS when she was taken to the third game by China’s Li Wenyan and lost 26-28 in the decider.
