Jung Jae Sung has not made the trip for Kuala Lumpur from his home of Seoul and had to withdraw from the men’s doubles tournament, where he and Lee Yong Dae were top seeds.
“I’ll be staying home from the Malaysia Open next week. I’m going to start some rehabilitation for my shoulder and other problems. I should have a good month and a half to heal up and rest and I hope to be ready for the All England and other European tournaments in March,” he had explained on the BWF website right after the Korea Open final on Sunday.
This leaves a good opportunity for Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, who see now two of their strongers opponents left out of the event, as Cai and Fu didn’t register for this tournament. The Malaysians, however, are drawn in the same half as their nemeses Ko and Yoo of Korea.
The walk-over from Jung and Lee was also good news for Tony Gunawan nd Howard Bach, who were scheduled to play the Koreans on Day 1, as for Austria’s Koch and Zauner, who were then promoted from qualifying to the main draw.
In the men’s singles, Hafiz Hashim benefitted from the withdrawal of Kashyap of India to make it to the main draw as well, where he will meet Rumbaka from Indonesia. In the women’s doubles, Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White replace Van Dooremalen and Jonathans in the main draw. Finally, Hong Wei and Pan Pan of China were promoted to the mixed doubles main draw to replace Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen / Christinna Pedersen.
