In the first leg of the first semi final between Indonesia’s Garuda and Malaysia’s Tigers, the former won the tie 2/1 in front of their home crowd. But the fact that Sony Dwi Kuncoro was beaten by Hafiz Hashim will give Malaysia the chance to win the overall tie, especially if Lee Chong Wei and Koo/Tan are fielded next time.
On Friday, Taufik Hidayat gave Garuda the first point against Liew Daren (21-19, 21-9) before Setiawan /Ahsan beat Lim and Goh 21-17, 21-17 to make it 2/0 for Indonesia. Hafiz then put back Malaysia’s Tigers on track when he beat Sony 21-13, 21-19. Tigers’ coach Rashid Sidek was still confident after the tie. “Garuda is strong, but at least we won a match,” he said to the Jakarta Post.
The overall winner of the tie will be decided upon calculation from both legs of the event, with matches, games, and points.
The other semi final sees Indonesia’s Rajawali take on Malaysia’s Leopard squad in the other semifinal with a first- leg match in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
