BELGIAN INT’L – A first for Sashina

Malaysian Born Sashina Vignes Waran, who has been adpoted by a French Family many years ago – has scooped her first International Challenge title on Sunday in Louvain, Belgium, after defeating Karina Schnasse of Germany in the longest match of the day. Vignes had things in hand to get even in the second game when she got nervous and served out, giving then the opportunity to Schnasse to finish it up in straight games, but the young athete living in Strasbourg saved a match point to eventually win 15-21, 24-22, 17-9 after her opponent retired.  Vignes may see Pi Hongyan’s retirement as a blessing in disguise as she might become France’s new number one – if ever she’s given the French passport she’d been applying for for about 4 years.

Indonesia’s Tedjono won the title in the men’s single event, beating Dicky Palyama in the third game, while doubles and mixed went different roads. Gabby White and Marcus Ellis scooped Gold in the mixte against their compatriots Langridge/Olver while Dutch Piek/Tabeling won the women’s doubles and Cwalina/Ridder the men’s doubles competition.
