Lee Deuk Choon has been named the new Head Coach of the Korean National Badminton Team. The Badminton Korea Association (BKA) announced late last week that Lee, who has been coaching the National Junior Team since 1994, would replace interim Head Coach Kim Joong Soo, who took the helm in late August of last year, following the removal of Sung Han Kook.
Lee Deuk Choon won the All England mixed doubles title in 1987 and coached a pro team in the early nineties before turning his focus to the national junior squad. Among the current National Team players, all but a couple of late bloomers spent much of their junior days under his tutelage and he was named Coach of the Year by the BKA for 2012, when his charges won two golds at the Asian Junior Championships and Lee So Hee and Shin Seung Chan picked up their second consecutive World Junior title, on top of numerous other titles at junior events in Asia and Europe.
Lee is to officially take the reins on April 1st and his term initially runs until the Incheon Asian Games in September-October 2014.
