The New Straits Times in Malaysia reported today that Datuk Seri Nadzmi Salleh had withdrawn his candidacy for the post of President of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Nadzmi had already announced on the weekend that he would not be standing for re-election as the Badminton Association of Malaysia President after accepting the top spot at the Badminton Asia Confederation on the weekend.
The latest announcement came after a meeting at Nadzmi’s home in Malaysia with fellow BWF presidential candidate Justian Suhandinata.
“What is important is Asian unity. If we have two candidates from Asia, there will be a split in votes. I thought about this and consulted the parties concerned. After taking into consideration all these factors, I have decided to withdraw from the BWF election,” Nadzmi told the New Straits Times.
Suhandinata will now be the sole Asian challenger running against Badminton Europe President Poul-Erik Hoyer.
