The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is facing a clear crisis. Tan Aik Mong, who had been appointed on a voluntary basis to restructure the national team, announced that he was quitting all his functions after 18 days on the job, according to The Star
“I was called by BAM president Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff to assist him in implementing changes and plans to revive Malaysia’s badminton. As all these changes and plans have now been reverted to the original structure, my involvement is no longer necessary,” said Aik Mong on Tuesday to Rajes Paul, The Star‘s badminton specialist.
Tan Aik Mong had shuffled the teams and coaches, a move that was criticized by many, including Lee Chong Wei, in particular because it resulted in the resignation of Rashid Sidek. BAM management had then announced a new plan, “Project Win Win”, which was a setback for Aik Mong.
Right after the announcement of Tan’s resignation, Rashid Sidek said that he was open to returning to BAM as a coach. “Returning to BAM as a coach is still an open option for me and I may still consider it,” said Rashid to the Star. “Having served for 10 years, obviously I feel sad to part ways. If there is a possibility of coming back, I will consider it.”
