The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced this weekend that the much feted instant review technology will be introduced at this years Superseries Finals, on the 11th December. The system’s introduction was earlier delayed from a scheduled debut at the Indonesian Open in June, in favour of further testing of the technical aspects.
In a BWF press release, Secretary General Thomas Lund said of the technology, “We have done lots of testing during this year’s OSIM BWF World Superseries to finalise how this system works and we are confident it will add to the drama and excitement of the Superseries Finals – both for players and fans.”
The head of the athletes’ commission Emma Mason has applauded the BWF stance of waiting for player feedback before a full implementation, viewing the introduction positively, speaking to the BWF to say, “The Athletes’ Commission is pleased that players will have an opportunity to test the proposed technology for instant reviews at the upcoming Superseries Finals.”
The system will work in a similar fashion to that in tennis, with an initial two possible challenges per match. The challenge must be reviewed immediately after the line call, with an incorrect challenge lost and a correct challenge maintained for another opportunity if required. The full details of the rules and regulations for the instant review system have been released to the players and public here.
