According to a column that appeared this week in The Indian Express, InIndianExpress.com, some foreign players signed with the Pune Pistons, an Indian Badminton League (IBL) franchise, haven’t received the entirety of their salary, almost three and a half months after the completion of the tournament.
The article says the wage payments were divided into four quarters, the last 25% having to be transferred 15 days (at last) after the end of the competition. The team’s co-owner has stated that no payment had been delayed. However, an anonymous non-Indian player of the franchise told the Indian paper that by the 6th of December he was still waiting for the last quarter of his salary to be paid, despite email reminders sent to the franchise owners. The source indicated that other foreign players from the Pune squad were also waiting for their last 25%.
According to one of the IBL’s commercial partners, the pending salaries have been slowed by legal paperwork and the levy of Indian taxes charged on foreign payments.
The Pune Pistons had recruited four foreign players (Juliane Schenk, Tan Wee Kiong, Joachim Fischer-Nielsen and Nyugen Tien Minh) for the total amount of $184,000.
