The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced today that a total sum of US$400,000 would be distributed to top 10 players at the end of the Superseries season, provided that they play in the requested events and meet the requirement in terms of promotion and media work through out the year.
“Players are the main attraction in our sport and we want to reward them for contributing to the success of the World Superseries; not only through playing and winning matches but also through engaging with the media, fans and sponsors – all of which are critical elements of promoting professional sports,” outlined BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer.
Amongst the other decisions taken last week in New Delhi by the BWF Council was a plan to raise the prize money for International Challenges and Series tournaments. International Challenge events will see a hike from the current minimum US$15,000 in 2014 to US$17,500 in 2016 and US$25,000 in 2018, while prize money for International Series tournaments moves from US$5,000 in 2014 to US$ 6,000 in 2016 and US$10,000 in 2018. So far, the majority of such tournaments have been offering the minimum prize money, with a notable exception coming this year, when the China International offered $50,000 in prize money.
