New national champions on 3 continents

Canada, India, Denmark, Sweden, and Estonia were playing their own national championships a week later than most of the European countries. Canada saw no fewer than three champions repeat but Andrew D'Souza (pictured top) reached the top of the podium at the nationals for the first time in his career.

Canada, India, Denmark, Sweden, and Estonia were playing their own a week later than most of the European countries.  Canada saw no fewer than three champions repeat but Andrew D’Souza (pictured top) reached the top of the podium at the nationals for the first time in his career.

Alex Bruce (pictured right) was the only double winner in Canada.  She won mixed for the first time ever but her partner Toby Ng won his 4th mixed title in 5 years, as Bruce did in women’s doubles.  We show here photos of some of the Canadian winners, live from Gatineau courtesy of Badmintonphoto’s Yves Lacroix.

While in Denmark, all favourites won – with the exception of Fischer-Nielsen/Pedersen in the mixed doubles – India came with new names as most favourites, including Saina Nehwal and Kashyap Parupalli, had skipped the event.  Sweden’s winners all took just one title each, while in Estonia, Kati Tolmoff won all three of her finals while her mixed partner Raul Must won two.

Europe’s top players will be in the Badmintonphoto lens when the European Mixed Team Championships kick off later this week in Leuven, Belgium.

Here are the new champions:
