There was a huge surprise in Lubin, Poland, during the European Team Championships, where Spain took the gold medal this morning with a 3-2 win over England. The Spanish team was expected to fare well in this competition thanks to their jewel Clara Azurmendi, but very few thought that they could challenge the usual powerhouses in Europe. The first surprise came during the semi final against Denmark, when the latter had a great opportunity to finish the tie after their women’s doubles were leading 20-15 in the decider. But in spite of 6 match points, the Danes weren’t able to finish it off and clinch their ticket for the final and Spain was on to take on England for the final. The English also had a scare and came back from a 2-1 lead for France in their own semi final before they managed to win both the women’s doubles and men’s doubles.

Final score:
Spain beat England  3-2
Bronze medallists: Denmark, France
