There are tough first days ahead for Malaysia’s new technical director Morten Frost. The famous Dane will have to deal with the departure of two coaches in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) stable: singles coach Rashid Sidek (photo) and women’s doubles coach Rosman Razak. Both have made it official in the local media yesterday that they could not accept the new contracts offered by their employer:
“I have no problems with any structural changes imposed by BAM, but I can’t adhere to these conditions. My last day will be today at the Malaysian Open, and I’ll reassess my options after this,” said Rashid to the Malay Mail.
Sidek, who has served the national body for 13 years, added: “It’s true the new contract will see our salaries raised but there are other things to be considered. The environment in BAM is unhealthy and the pressure gets to us coaches.”
What the Malaysian coach was referring to is the new Key Performance Indicator, or KPI, which implies that coaches are also judged by the performance of their shuttlers, with a target of a quarter-final in the event they participate in. Sidek had already quit for a few days in 2013 before coming back to the national team.
This comes at a bad time for a Malaysian team that hopes to fare well in their home event, which kicks off on Tuesday in Bukit Jalil. Lee Chong Wei is, of course, not participating as the hearing on his doping case is due on April 11th in Amsterdam.
