Badminton England reported yesterday that Britain’s top men’s singles shuttler Rajiv Ouseph would be retiring from international badminton competition next month, after the Badminton World Championships, and before his 33rd birthday.
Ouseph made his first mark on international badminton in 2005, when he became European Junior Champion in March, then followed it up by reaching his first senior final that autumn, at the Welsh International. His real breakthrough year was 2010, when he made it to the podium for the first time at the European Championships, then won his first major title, at the U.S. Open Grand Prix Gold, then he capped off a brilliant year by taking silver at the Commonwealth Games.
It was his European title in 2017, though, that he told Badminton England was his finest hour but he also pointed with pride to his successes in multi-sport competitions both for England and for Great Britain. He medalled for England at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2018. His first time representing Britain at the Olympics was in his birthplace of London in 2012 and in 2016, in Rio, he reached the quarter-finals.
All of us at Badzine with Rajiv Ouseph and his family the very best for the future.
