EUROPEAN JUNIORS 2011 – Germany on top

After beating Denmark in the semi-final for what has been the surprise of the European Badminton Championships’ team event in Vantaa, Finland, Germany clinched the gold medal by beating Russia 3-2 in the final.

Germany enters history and will definitely be a team to count on in the future with bright prospects. Isabel Herttrich and Max Schwenger both scooped two points in the doubles and mixed in the final and put their team back on track after the surprising loss from top European player Fabienne Deprez but it had no influence on the final result as her compatriots made up for her loss.

Germans took the points in all doubles, mixed, men’s doubles and women’s doubles while Russia’s Yanatoly Yartsev and Romina Gabdullina took the points for Russia.

“This is an amazing feeling to win this for Germany. All week we have felt good and performed well and we just grew stronger with every match and after beating Denmark we knew we had what it takes to go out and beat Russia. Personally, it was a great week for me but really it was about our team and the way we fought hard for every single point,” Max Schwenger told Badminton Europe.

The individual event has kicked off right after the team event on Monday afternoon and is well underway after the second day of competition, where all major favourites went through – only 4 seeded singles players were ousted on Tuesday.  The Danes will be eager to grab titles to make up for their team loss, with Viktor Axelsen as the main favourite for the men’s single title.
