Th draw of the European Championships to be held in Sweden from April 17th to 21st was released on Tuesday, with some crucial consequences for some players who have not yet gotten their qualification for the London Games and were banking on a good run there to scoop the needed points to make the trip to England this summer.
In the men’s singles, Peter Gade is top seed and sees HK Vittinghus and Viktor Axelsen n his half of the draw. The Dane, who has opted out of an ankle operation, will have a tricky second round (after a bye) aainst Ville Lang of Finland probably. In form Vittinghus will most likely play Dieter Domke in the second round while the Dutch have tough first rounds. Palyama takes on Poland’s Wacha and Eric Pang is to play France’s 5 time national Champion Brice Leverdez.
In the women’s single, Elisabeth Cann and Susan Egelstaff will battle for UK’s sole spot in London Olympics and the Jersey girl looks at a fairly easier draw until the third round where is is expected to meet top seed Tine Baun. On her end, the Scottish girl will take on Kristina Gavnholt in the first round and – in case of victory for both in the second round – Pi Hongyan in the third.
In the men’s doubles, the first round will see a remake of Finland’s final between the two Russian pairs, but Denmark is looking strong with Boe/Mogensen and Rasmussen/Conrad-Petersen at each end of the draw. Adcock and Ellis might play their spot for the Olympics in the quarter finals against Germans Kindervater and Schoettler.
The women’s doubles competition is quite open with Denmark looking as if they might get the title back for their country after Russia scooped the title last time, while in the mixed, the battle between Adcock/Bankier and Robertson/Wallwork might see an end in the quarter final as both pairs are set to meet each other. It could be Robertson’s last chance to participate in the Olympics.
