Juliane Schenk and Ratchanok Intanon have withdrawn from the Malaysia Open, leaving the bottom half of the women’s singles draw wide open. The two women, seeded 2nd and 5th respectively, were expected to meet in the quarter-final.
The biggest beneficiary from their absence is likely to be Korea Open winner Sung Ji Hyun. If she can win her quarter-final, likely against whoever emerges from the first round matchup between Minatsu Mitani and Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, she will have an unseeded semi-final opponent.
The only other withdrawals from main draws were Malaysia’s Vivian Hoo / Woon Khe Wei in women’s doubles and Adcock and Ellis of England in men’s doubles.
