After the clash of the SEA Games badminton schedule with the dates of their event, the organizers of the Superseries Finals have another headache coming their way. The event, set to be held in Kuala Lumpur, will be played without its probable top seed and favourite Lee Chong Wei. Since Lin Dan will not qualify on merit and no wild card being distributed, Lee Chong Wei is the clear favourite to take a fourth crown, especially at home. But the world number one said in an interview given to The Star that he would be skipping the event as well as the SEA Games.
“I plan to take a break in December. I am not entered for the SEA Games in Myanmar. I would qualify for the BWF Superseries Finals as the top seed but I do not intend to play in it. I would rather take a break the whole of December and start afresh for the new season in 2014 with the Korean and Malaysian Opens,” he told Rajes Paul of The Star.
Chong Wei is set to play all Superseries events until then – Japan, Denmark, France, China and Hong Kong – as well as the China Badminton Super League for his team of Guangzhou.
This year, in the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, Bukit Jalil was far from full after the Malaysian squad was shown the exit in the quarter-final stage. Chong Wei’s absence in the Superseries finals could have the same impact on the event and will definitely be something the promoters will find tough to deal with for what should be the peak of the season for the BWF events.
