Just two years ago, Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam was stunning the field by making the semi-finals of the World Championships in Guangzhou. It’s still early yet but with his ranking having slipped to #34 in the World, Nguyen is clawing back onto the main stage, first by upsetting #10 seed Parupalli Kashyap of India.
Nguyen and Kashyap came into today’s match tied at 4-all in the head-to-head record. Their rivalry has involved encounters on all the biggest stages: the Asian Championships, Asian Games, Olympic Games and also the 2011 World Championships.
Nguyen admitted to being tired after both of his first two matches went past the hour mark, but the 32-year-old brings plenty of confidence into his likely third round encounter with Japan’s 4th-seeded Kento Momota.
