After the withdrawal of Ratchanok Intanon from the BWF World Junior Championships, India suffered a double blow when it was announced on Saturday that two of their brighest chances to clinch gold medals would not make the trip to Chiba, Japan at the end of the month. P.V. Sindhu and Sameer Verma have withdrawn from the competition due to injuries.
“Sindhu won’t be participating. She hurt her knee in China and Japan and played with the injury at the senior nationals in Srinagar. She then got an MRI done and the doctor advised her to take some rest,” said chief national coach P. Gopichand to Daily News & Analysis. Verma, meanwhile, hurt his ankle.
This double withdrawal comes at a bad time for India, who could have enjoyed Intanon’s absence as India is together with Thailand in group W2 of the team competition together with Finland and Bulgaria.
