Former English badminton star Gail Emms is still very fit: she has started climbing the Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain (5895m) together with a delegation of 26 other athletes to raise funds and awareness for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation a charity helping the lives over one million disadvantaged youngsters worldwide through sports-based projects..
Other top stars have joined the team, amongst which Martina Navratilova, ex Tennis World number one, who suffered a breast cancer last year. The latter said she hoped to raise 100 000 € through the donation page.
The team left for Africa on December 5th and has reached Africa for the first trek which was to take Gail to 2600 m already. Before the departure, the English shuttler has prepared herslef for the worse conditions:
“This cold weather should be fantastic for me and for my training to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The temperature can be minus 20 degrees at the summit,” she said in her blog HERE
Gail Emms is the Ambassador for Badminton England and has always shown great involvement in charity both during her career and after she retired in 2008.
Her former partner Nathan Robertson is also involved in various charity foundations, amongst which Solibad – Badminton Without Borders.
