World #1 Lee Chong Wei is putting to auction the shirt he wore during the finals of the YONEX BWF World Badminton Championships held last week in London, with all benefits going to SOLIBAD – Badminton without Borders. The auction bids will end on August 24th
Only minutes after losing to Lin Dan in one of the most dramatic Finals the world of badminton ever saw, Malaysia’s badminton jewel Lee Chong Wei was back down to earth showing what a great champion he is, giving away his shirt of the final for a good cause.
“I’m sorry this is not the winning T-shirt but that’s the best I could do today” he simply said, handing the T-shirt to Solibad’s founder Raphaël Sachetat, only minutes after he stepped down the podium with a silver medal around his neck. The very same T-shirt which had seen him play over one hour and twenty minutes of amazing badminton against the reigning Champion Lin Dan, missing out on two match points before bowing to the Chinese Ace.
Lee Chong Wei has always been supportive of Solibad, since the very start of the foundation’s actions, whose Global Ambassador is Pi Hongyan and Malaysia’s Ambassador is his good friend Koo Kien Keat.
“I didn’t think Chong Wei would remember about the shirt we had asked about before the final, as he must have had plenty of others things in his mind then, but as soon as he saw me, he came down on his bag to get the shirt and hand it over, just like he had after his first All England title, few days after the launch of Solibad in 2010. It’s a sign that he genuinely is a nice person” said Sachetat
The shirt has been put to auction on Solibad website, on August 18th 2011, on Ebay, with all benefits going to the foundations local projects, including an orphanage in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, but also some projects in Haiti, Brazil and other places around the world.
The auction will be out from August 17th to August 24th. The last bids will be taken at 15.30 GMT, (22.30 Singapore/Kuala Lumpur Time).
