The Badminton World Federation today published the draws for the 2010 Yonex BWF World Championships on their website. Among the surprises were a handful of women’s doubles pairs that were promoted from the reserve list. One of these, Asian Champions Pan Pan / Tian Qing of China, even ended up as the #7 seed. However, after their first-round bye they will have their hands full with none other than Olympic silver medallists Lee Hyo Jung / Lee Kyung Won, who were another surprise addition.
With an abundance of byes, especially for the higher seeds, most of the big matches will have to wait for the later rounds, of course, but there are still some tough match-ups coming even on Day 1 as, for example, 2005 champions Howard Bach / Tony Gunawan take on Indonesia Open semi-finalists Anthony Clark / Nathan Robertson of England. In the women’s singles, two of Europe’s best, Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva and Judith Meulendijks of the Netherlands, go at it in the first round while there could be a repeat of Sunday’s Chinese Taipei Open final between Cheng Shao Chieh and Bae Seung Hee. In men’s singles, Malaysia will likely see two of its top three duke it out in the second round as Lee Chong Wei and Hafiz Hashim were drawn in the same bracket. Of course, no one wants to be drawn to face the three-time defending champion but this year that honour will go to Iran’s Ali Shahhosseini, who will be the first to test the post China League form of the mighty Lin Dan.
Badzine will be on site in Paris to bring you all the action, complete with live photos from BadmintonPhoto.
