After receiving a scare in the semi-finals against Japan, China seemed more determined to close their hands on the title. Right from the start, they spared Indonesia no fighting chance. Chen Qingchen / Zheng Siwei trail blazed the path to the victory by beating Marsheille Gicha Islami / Andika Ramadiansyah 21-10, 21-14.
With this match victory, Chen Qingchen (pictured), who is also the Chinese team captain, has become the most successful shuttler in the World Junior Championship history. She has bagged 3 team titles and 3 individual titles thus far and will have a real opportunity to add 2 more titles to her belt during the upcoming individual event. She has now beaten the previous record holder Yu Yang, who had 2 team and 3 individual titles.
Indonesia’s hope for a comeback afterwards was dimmed after their men’s singles shuttler Panji Ahmad Maulana bowed down to Lin Guipu (pictured bottom) in straight games, 21-11, 21-16.
He Jiting / Zheng Siwei (pictured) then concluded it beautifully for China. They had no trouble overcoming Andika Ramadiansyah / Rinov Rinaldy, 21-13, 21-10, and brought their team to the podium after spending a mere 26 minutes on court
With this, the Indonesian team became the runner-up while Chinese Taipei clinched the third place in the team event. Japan, the only team that gave the eventual champion China a real threat in the tournament, finished fourth. Their two Watanabes, who had helped push China to the limit in the semis, both lost as Chinese Taipei beat Japan 3-0 to snatch third.
The individual event gets underway on Tuesday with Lin and Chen both looking to repeat as champions. Chen has a new mixed partner in Zheng but is back with Jia Yifan, with whom she won the girls’ doubles title last year. Last year’s runner-up He Bingjiao is also the favourite to take China’s first girls’ singles title since Wang Lin did it way back in 2007.
